We recently reported that the hours for the Downsville Solid Waste Transfer center were being shortened as of November 1. It is now clear that this is only the beginning of possible cuts to the hours of county transfer centers. This is due to the economic crisis being caused by the declining revenue from recycling programs, which has become a nationwide concern. This is partly because China has recently started to refuse shipments of recyclable plastics. Downsville, for example, would be cut to one 4-hour period per week. One proposal that may be made at the meeting is to double the solid waste fees on the property tax to keep something like the current hours. There is currently a large shortfall of money to pay for the recycling program.

A special meeting of the Dunn County Solid Waste and Recycling Board will be held on Thursday, Nov. 14 at 5:30 PM in the County Board Room to discuss a new business plan for the transfer centers. This plan will reduce hours for almost all of the facilities. One possible plan is to shorten the hours for the smaller facilities to one 4-hour period per week. The board voted to move a new business plan for the centers forward at their last meeting. This public meeting will put the new business plan into effect. If you have concerns about the hours of operation of the transfer centers in the county this will be your opportunity to have your voice heard.
