Zebra Mussels in Lake Menomin
Menomonie, Wisconsin, 04/30/2024– The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has
informed the City of Menomonie that Zebra Mussels have been found in Lake Menomin.

What are Zebra Mussels:

Zebra mussels are a small mollusk that are an invasive species in Wisconsin.
They often impact plankton and algae populations in bodies of water which
can harm fish populations. They avoid eating blue-green algae which can
increase toxic algal blooms.

What’s being done to prevent further spread:

The City of Menomonie and Wisconsin DNR are working together to
prevent further spread.
• Wisconsin DNR will monitor public boat ramps
• The City of Menomonie installed a boat wash station at the Lakeside Park boat launch.
• The City of Menomonie was awarded a Wisconsin DNR grant to install a second boat wash at
Point Comfort Park by 2026.

What can you do to prevent the spread of invasive species:

• INSPECT your boat, trailer, and equipment.
• REMOVE any attached aquatic plants or animals (before launching, after loading and before
transporting on a public highway).
• DRAIN all water from boats, motors and all equipment.
• NEVER MOVE live fish away from a waterbody.
• DISPOSE of unwanted bait in the trash.
• BUY minnows from a Wisconsin bait dealer. Use leftover minnows only under certain conditions
