The weather turned to snow and then to ice. In our hilly part of the world, rural people are used to finding new ways out of the valleys during bad weather. However, for residents living in Schoepps Valley (pronounced “Sheps”) the usual way out is not an option. The story began early August 11, 2016 when torrential rains dumped up to 11 ½ inches in our area.

Fixed - life is happy again

Events that have been added to the site recently don't end up with maps being generated. This is due to some changes that Google has made to their API's - and the code that generates coordinates for the maps is at the moment broken.  I am chasing down a resolution to the problem - but it may be another day or two.

Army denies easement for Dakota Access Pipeline - construction halted

People at the Oceti Sakowin Camp are rejoicing this afternoon as the Army has announced that the Corps of Engineers is denying the easement for the pipeline under Lake Oahe. This essentially halts construction for the time being, and the Army Corps of Engineers is planning for an Environmental Impact Study with public input.

The Internet Archive, a digital library nonprofit that preserves billions of webpages for the historical record, is building a backup archive in Canada after the election of Donald Trump. Today, it began collecting donations for the Internet Archive of Canada, intended to create a copy of the archive outside the United States.

Menoonie Orgnizing Meeting

Over 50 community members gathered at the Menomonie  Public Library on November 29 to discuss life after the 2016 presidential election, and ways to organize more effectively politically. The group identified a large number of issues which concerned them, various connections throughout the community, and actions that could be taken in the future. This is an initial meeting, and there will be more in the future. It's always exciting to see grassroots movement within the community.
