How You Can Help 2 - The send us stuff edition

Wiscommunity Logo

We've been working on new ways for our readers to send articles on the web that they find interesting.  We did a little test of this quite a few months back, but I'd like to put this out to more people. We're using some software called Pearltrees. Basically the idea is that you can sign up with a Pearltrees account, and ask us to join in as a contributor.

You may or may not have found yourself sitting on the porch on a beautiful summery/fallsy day like today, and asked yourself "How can I help out that nice Wis.Community site?" Well, maybe not, but the fact of the matter is that I'm going to tell you anyway.

The Chippewa Valley Tweetstorm

It's been there for a while, but I thought I would point out the Chippewa Valley Tweetstorm on the front page at . It brings together the tweets of lots of people in the Chippewa Valley and across Wisconsin.  Go take a look!

What Next? Your Choice!

Wiscommunity Logo

I have a pile of possible projects for the site in the hopper.  I'd like to ask our readers what you think should be a priority.  They're all feasible.  Some of the require the kindness of strangers. Let me know what you think:  If you have other ideas, log in to the site and leave a comment.

Wis.Community - where we have been, where we are going

Wiscommunity Logo

In preparation for tonight's Planning Meeting, I've put together a slideshow about some of the goals for this site, where we've been and where I hope we are going. I'm putting up a copy of the slide show to give you some idea of what the first half of tonight's meeting will be like and  what the current plans are.  We're hoping that members of the community will show up tonight and give us their ideas. We will be meeting at 6:30 at Lazy Monk Brewery in Eau Claire.

Help us with planning for Wis.Community

Wiscommunity Logo

Come join us for a meeting to plan the next steps for Wis.Community. The platform is up and has been functioning for some time, but I want to know what can be done to make this more useful to communities throughout the state.  Bring your ideas, suggestions, questions, and complaints. In this time of fake news, political polarization, and silos of community members who are not talking to each other, Wis.Community could help to bridge gaps between different groups and communities.

What We're Reading

Wiscommunity Logo

We're working on incorporating a few more collaborative tools into the site. One has appeared on the front page this afternoon.  There is a "what we're reading" section on the front page. This is a test at setting up ways for people to contribute more content.  We will be inviting some of our editors and contributors to mark articles on the web that they have found interesting, and to contribute them into our team collection of interesting stories.

Look & See - A Portrait of Wendell Berry

Look and See Poster

Nick Offerman On The Film "Look & See"

We are sponsoring our first Wis.Community community film showing. We hope to do more of these in the coming months - films that enlighten and entertain, and that will not show in local theaters otherwise.

LOOK & SEE is a cinematic portrait of farmer and writer Wendell Berry. Through his eyes, we see both the changing landscapes of rural America in the era of industrial agriculture and the redemptive beauty in taking the unworn path.

Everybody talks about the weather - but we're doing something about it

Weather

We just dropped in some weather widgets on the site - you'll see one on the right hand side of the front page. These are IP-enabled weather widgets, so they will show you the weather in whatever location the internet gods decide you are in when looking at the site.  If the gods are wrong, just tell it where you want it to look.  If you click on the little Willy Weather logo on the bottom you'll be taken to a full-page weather forecast with radar, etc.

Grant and new Community Partner

Bloomer

I am happy to announce that Wis.Community has received a grant from the Save The Hills Alliance to develop the Environment section of the site and do more environmental work. We thank STHA for their interest and trust.  There will be more about this as this new partnership progresses.

Small Site Updates - experimenting with importing events from Meetup

For those of you who use the Meetup app to schedule events, we're working on importing events from Meetup. This is working fairly well, and we just imported the first batch. Basically this is based on Meetup's rules for what is an "active" Meetup event, which means that the meetup needs to have members and at least 3 people signed up to go to the event.

The Big Share

The Big Share: March 7, 2017

Tomorrow is the day of The Big Share in Wisconsin. You get an opportunity for one day to make investments in the Wisconsin community by donating to nonprofits and other worthy organizations in the state. It's easy - go to the Big Share Website and make your contributions on-line. Many of the organizations have matching shares, so for many of them donating tomorrow will multiply your charitable giving.

Wis.Community Events

calendar

I want to say a few words about the events calendar. This is one of the core parts of this site, and I would love to see us get more events.

Wis.community grows

Lots of site improvements are going on at Wis.community for the new year. The site now has a membership option, where you can voluntarily make a contribution to help us grow.  There are memberships starting at $10 for an individual - currently the only perk on the site is that members of any type will have most of the ads on the site disappear when they are logged in. More perks are coming, including some nice additions for members who are nonprofits or businesses.

The plan - 2017

Wiscommunity

For those of you who have been following along, I'd like to point out a few new ideas and plans for 2017.  Some of them are ambitious.  Some of them may not happen. But I thought I'd let you know what I'm thinking:

Wis.community Memberships

We are now set up so that you can contribute to the growth and development of Wis.community. Y, and pay with Paypal, check, or with a credit card. Money from memberships will be used to help defray the cost of the site - and we're also working on some new benefits that you will get with a membership.

Hi -

This is the Wiscommunity space. It's the place for discussion about Wiscommunity, how it should be developing, issues with the site, and what the future holds.
