New Training Videos

December 23, 2016

We now have some to learn how to better use Wis.Community.  I'm just getting started on creating these - not that this is a playlist player, so you can either watch them all, or pick a selected one with the drop-down menu at the top left corner.

New Questionnaire

December 11, 2016

Hi -

If you get a chance, it would be great if you could take just a minute or two to fill out our latest questionnaire. These really help us to figure out what should be worked on, and what your interests are.

Maps on Events

December 5, 2016

Well, it's always something.

Fixed - life is happy again

Events that have been added to the site recently don't end up with maps being generated. This is due to some changes that Google has made to their API's - and the code that generates coordinates for the maps is at the moment broken.  I am chasing down a resolution to the problem - but it may be another day or two.

Moving forward - Partnerships

Brief tutorial on logging in and out of Wis.community

I'm talking to the good folks at at the moment - I'm interested in the possiblity of gathering info from folks in the community by text message, and this is an intriguing platform for that. There's an interesting article at Nieman Lab about the use of the platform in journalism.

Let us know if this sounds intriguing to you.

Facebook Events

October 19, 2016

We are now importing some events in from Facebook -- they will show up in Black on the calendar, as do all the events that are imported in from other calendars on the Internet.  The Facebook events all have links that go to the actual Facebook event - but we pull them all here into one place for you.

Responsive Videos

October 12, 2016

The videos on the site are all now responsive ( or should be) so they will now fit on different sizes of screens properly. This requires more testing.

Search fixed on site

October 11, 2016

Nobody has complained about it, but the search function on the site has been mildly broken for a long time --- it would work once, then return the same search results for about 15 minutes, and then work once again. This was a bad caching configuration on the site.  You should now be able to search much more successfully.  My apologies.

Wis.community general info

October 11, 2016

Wis.community is several things:

  • A collection of “mini-sites” or communities based on topic or location

  • Discussion areas in each community that can be carried on either on the site or via email or text messaging (soon)

  • Event calendars for each community, and an aggregated calendar of all of the communities

  • Spaces for news and resources in each community

Wiscommunity - fixed a few errors

October 6, 2016

Though I suspect this probably only affected me at the moment, there've been a few serious issues in editing on the site. This cropped up from some setting changes I'd made recently while trying to debug a different problem on the site. Sigh.  Anyway, I'd accidentally set the site to use a version of jquery that broke some of the editing, particularly things that had popups. This mostly made it impossible to change the image at the top of each community page.

Hi -

This is the Wiscommunity space. It's the place for discussion about Wiscommunity, how it should be developing, issues with the site, and what the future holds.

This Thanksgiving I am, despite the very odd year we have all had, thankful. I'm still here. I have two daughters who came into my life in a non-traditional way, and we're still a family, though we are half a country apart today. Next year for sure. Still, I cannot help but think of the many chairs at the Thanksgiving table that are empty today, some of them permanently. Even though that is hard, I'm thankful that it looks like we stand a chance to start living normally again by this time next year.

I'm thankful that we have a lot better chance as a country to hang together next year. And I am thankful that many of you out there are going to work to make it happen. For those of you who are not willing to let go of grudges, I cannot be thankful for you, but I'll make an effort to love you anyway.

I'm also thankful for the other adopted families that I have - as someone who is quickly becoming older, these extended families are a comfort.

I'm thankful that I have a beautiful dinner tonight, even though I am eating it by myself. It is full of healthful food from . I am thankful that I have had the privilege of working to, as we like to say, run a grocery store with my friends. And the co-op has become not only a bunch of friends but also another family.

Another family that has come into my life is the . Although I am only a farmer in the most remote way possible, I've met many wonderful people in the Farmers Union and am looking forward to being at the virtual convention with you all soon. It's the best example of participative democracy that I know of, and I'm always happy and proud to meet. Let's hope that we can start being in the same room again real soon now, and have another one of those wonderful harvest dinners.

Last of all, you readers are another family of mine. I get encouragement and thanks from you and it is always a sweet surprise. Some of you to keep things spinning along here. It's a small family but I am working on making it grow. You'll be hearing a little more about that in the next week. Some days this work is discouraging but at the moment there is actually some money in the company account, and a bunch of plans and hopes and dreams.

I have a couple of Thanksgiving traditions, which feel odd without my long-time partner Lori. Ther is music in the house today, which of course is a must. And I'll share two of my other favorite Thanksgiving traditions here since I can with the wonders of modern technology.
