So That Happened - 10/29/2019

October 29, 2019

This is a semi-regular compendium of thoughts, observations, and events from the Chippewa Valley.

Attending the Google News Initiative conference

October 10, 2019

I was notified yesterday that WisCommunity's application to attend the meeting in Chicago has been accepted. Google will be paying accommodation expenses for me to attend the meeting and find out new ideas for monetization of news, and other initiatives that Google is working on for journalists.

Site Changes

October 6, 2019

You may have noticed that the site has been down off and on for the last couple days.  You may also have noticed this afternoon that it is a good deal faster than it used to be, or at least it appears that way at Chateau Cruiskeen. I've made some rather serious changes to the way the site is run on this server, and I'm hoping that this will fix some long-standing performance issues.

Like Someone Had Branded My Brain

September 11, 2019

I was driving from the farm to a gig at Best Buy where I was working as a consultant. It was a normal sunny day in The Cities as I tried to swill down enough coffee to wake up as I was listening to NPR, just like normal.

WisCommunity is back

Steve Hanson
September 6, 2019

As I am sure has been clear, WisCommunity has been very slowly updated for the last few months. Those of you who know me personally have been aware that my wife has had serious health issues over the last nine months. I am sad to have to report that my darling Lorelei died on August 25th at home with me and our daughters.

The perils of a one-man enterprise

Miranda "Bear with .." from S01 E01

July 18, 2019

As has probably been apparent, posting and maintenance at Wis.Commuity has been more than a little slow lately. It's one of the problems with having what is essentially a one-man operation (not for lack of trying to spread the work through the community). The gist of it is that if I for one reason or another cannot work every day, things suffer.

Commenting Changes on Wiscommunity

site logo
May 23, 2019

We have made some changes to commenting policy on the site. In the past no comments could be made on the site unless you have previously created an account with us and signed in. For at least the time being, comments can be made by people without accounts, but they will be held for moderation until an editor approves them. We hope this will promote a lively discussion in the community without allowing a free-for-all of spam and other problems.

So That Happened 4/14/2019

April 14, 2019

I'll be poking myself in here from time to time with rambling discussions of what is happening at Wis.Community, observations, and things you may or may not find interesting. This may at some point become a podcast. Or not. Bear with me. Call it a blog. Call it the musings of a quickly-aging guy. It's an experiment.

Winter Was Hard

Winter Was Hard

March 13, 2019

Winter continues to unleash upon us. More stories are coming on about barn collapses, accidents, and more caused by the incredible weather we have been experiencing. Today almost all of the area schools are closed due to water covering the roads, making them impassable. I am at the moment sitting out at the farm and wondering if I will be able to get into town tomorrow for the Red Cedar Watershed Conference.

Keeping On - Help!

The Beatles - Help!

February 4, 2019

As you have probably noticed, life on this web site has slowed somewhat the last few months. Those of you who know me personally are probably aware that we're dealing with serious family health issues at Cruiskeen Lawn, and that has made it difficult to get a lot of work done, much less make long-range plans.

No School Board Coverage tonight --- will be at candidate forum

October 22, 2018

Lack of resources strikes again. Rather than being at tonight's Menomonie School Board Meeting, we will be videotaping the 67th District Candidate Forum in Bloomer. If you're going, stop by and say hello to the guy with the video camera.  Details of the candidate forum (Wren Keturi and Rob Summerfield candidates) are below, as well as a link to tonight's Menomonie School Board agenda.

A few other items of interest this week:

Off in Chicago

October 12, 2018

You may have noted that postings have been slow recently. I am off in Chicago at the LION Publisher Summit at Columbia College. This is always a great experience for learning the latest in technology, strategy, and everything else about publishing local independent news.

How You Can Help 2 - The send us stuff edition

Wiscommunity Logo
September 30, 2018

We've been working on new ways for our readers to send articles on the web that they find interesting.  We did a little test of this quite a few months back, but I'd like to put this out to more people. We're using some software called Pearltrees. Basically the idea is that you can sign up with a Pearltrees account, and ask us to join in as a contributor.

September 15, 2018

You may or may not have found yourself sitting on the porch on a beautiful summery/fallsy day like today, and asked yourself "How can I help out that nice Wis.Community site?" Well, maybe not, but the fact of the matter is that I'm going to tell you anyway.

Wis.Community will be offering an opportunity to see the new PBS/POV documentary Dark Money before the national showing of the film on PBS.

The Chippewa Valley Tweetstorm

August 28, 2018

It's been there for a while, but I thought I would point out the Chippewa Valley Tweetstorm on the front page at https://www.wis.community. It brings together the tweets of lots of people in the Chippewa Valley and across Wisconsin.  Go take a look!

What Next? Your Choice!

July 7, 2018

I have a pile of possible projects for the site in the hopper.  I'd like to ask our readers what you think should be a priority.  They're all feasible.  Some of the require the kindness of strangers. Let me know what you think:  If you have other ideas, log in to the site and leave a comment.

Wis.Community - where we have been, where we are going

May 3, 2018

In preparation for tonight's Planning Meeting, I've put together a slideshow about some of the goals for this site, where we've been and where I hope we are going. I'm putting up a copy of the slide show to give you some idea of what the first half of tonight's meeting will be like and  what the current plans are.  We're hoping that members of the community will show up tonight and give us their ideas. We will be meeting at 6:30 at Lazy Monk Brewery in Eau Claire.

Hi -

This is the Wiscommunity space. It's the place for discussion about Wiscommunity, how it should be developing, issues with the site, and what the future holds.
