The Go-Go's - Vacation (Official Music Video)

March 29, 2022

Posting will be slow for the next two weeks. I will be taking a vacation to the west coast and will only be writing on occasion. Things should return to normal around April 15.

The truth about St. Patrick’s Day

A man dressed as Saint Patrick blesses the crowd in Dublin as the parade makes its way through the Irish capital in 1998.

WisCommunity is on vacation, so are COVID statistics

You may have noticed a slowdown in news on WisCommunity - Your editor is currently taking a vacation i California to visit an old friend. I will be back on the 20th

It's always something - and then there's the weather

February 5, 2021

So it's the tech week from - er - heck here. Beyond the normal pile of slightly-unexpected tech issues, at the moment our VPS supplier tells us they're having some internet stability into our data center. I've noticed a few periods when we've dropped off the web, which has made life interesting. Add that to the fact that I had to fix 2 different laptops this week, power outages in the area, and a quick drop into the deep freeze starting tonight, it's been quite a week.

Oops again

February 2, 2021

Well, it's been a week of surprises. I've been trying to shape up some of the behavior of the web site in preparation for doing a complete site upgrade and tuning the server performance. In the process, I managed to forget that I'd left the server in an odd mode while I was debugging something, and the upshot is that this morning it completely ran itself out of memory. The technical term in the system administration for this is "Httpd faw down go boom".

What's up at WisCommunity in January 2021

January 24, 2021

So many projects, so little time. Once in a blue moon, I write a little article to let readers know what is going on here, and what you will see coming in the future.

Who Are We?

January 23, 2021

WisCommunity is published by Steve Hanson, who is the primary employee at the moment. We are working on expanding our staff and may be taking on an intern and perhaps a part-time employee soon. WisCommunity is involved in a consortium of concerned citizens of Dunn County working toward building a more sustainable news environment.

Airing of the Grievances 2020

Seinfeld Festivus Image
December 29, 2020

Yes, it's late for Festivus - but the airing of the grievances happens all year long. For a change I'm going to write about them. Don't worry, some time between now and New Years I'll talk about the things in 2020 that I am happy about.

Thankful

WKRP Turkey Drop

November 26, 2020

This Thanksgiving I am, despite the very odd year we have all had, thankful. I'm still here. I have two daughters who came into my life in a non-traditional way, and we're still a family, though we are half a country apart today. Next year for sure. Still, I cannot help but think of the many chairs at the Thanksgiving table that are empty today, some of them permanently.

Live Streaming of School Board meetings to be suspended

November 12, 2020

Many of our readers have been following the live streams of the Menomonie School Board meetings. We've been providing this live stream because we think that schools are important to the public, and because the school board is one of the very few government entities that has been meeting in person rather than virtually since the pandemic started.

Back to Normal

November 4, 2020

Normal in this case is referring to the website, not to anything else. Like many of you, I stayed up late last night - just long enough to hear the President of the United States threaten democracy. And to see that the election is going to be with us for some time in the future. I intended to leave the site in election mode until the national elections seemed clear, but that is clearly far off in the future, and there are other things to talk about in the interim.

Happy Halloween and enjoy that extra hour of sleep!

October 31, 2020

It is going to be a Halloween like we've never seen before. Only small stabs at Trick or Treat. No big organized parties. No costume parades. Please try to stay home and be safe tonight even though -yes, it's sad. I am going to watch the Rocky Horror Picture Show Live Stream tonight - last year I went out with friends to have a few drinks and some food, and to dress up a little. There's no denying, life is different and at the moment I don't see it getting better any time real soon.

What's Up at WisCommunity?

It has been quite a while since I last wrote a community update. But life has been crazy here, and something else always gets in the way. Today I am fixing this.

We're interested in you, our readers. And we want to know more about what your interests are, and how we can serve the community better. Besides, I'm taking a class and am doing a research project as part of that. I'm asking that you consider taking a little time to help WisCommunity grow and improve.

What's up with WisCommunity?

June 20, 2020

Since lately the world seems to have become crazier than normal and I have been caught up in working a lot more than normal, I thought it was time to take a deep breath and let you know what's up with us, and the news, and the future.

How do you think Wisconsin should re-open for business?

COVID-19 Virus
May 14, 2020

In some ways after yesterday's court order this poll is moot. But it is still interesting to see what our readers think. The small unscientific poll results show a very mixed set of ideas about re-opening the state:

What's up in WisCommunity Land?

May 8, 2020

So it's like this. It's Friday night and I've spent part of the afternoon coping with the fact that our web provider fell off of the internet intermittently for a lot of the afternoon. And I'm still getting used to the idea that the big pot of money I was hoping for from Facebook seems not to have fallen into the company checking account.

Hi -

This is the Wiscommunity space. It's the place for discussion about Wiscommunity, how it should be developing, issues with the site, and what the future holds.
