You may have heard politicians and the media use the line that schools should “open” or schools have a plan to “re-open.” This has caused a lot of confusion because schools never stopped providing support and instruction to their students. Teachers never stopped teaching. Yes, to protect students and families, many districts had to adjust their methods of instruction, but the work never stopped.

Another record-breaking day for new COVID-19 cases in Wisconsin

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services has reported a new record for new COVID-19 cases in the state in the numbers just released. Today's numbers include 2533 new cases, the second day in a row of over 2000 reports. The percentage of positive cases to negative cases has also increased again today to 19.38 percent. The state is facing a quickly-rising pandemic increase after the beginning of school.

Questions Remain Unanswered for Schools

The first day of school has always been an exciting time for children. About this time of year, heading into August, families begin to plan their schedule and stock up on school supplies. For some it might mean new supplies or even new clothes. Kids want to make a good impression that first day and parents want a routine in their busy life.

 

That was then, and this is now.

School referendums around Wisconsin have been steadily increasing in the 2010s, particularly years when a general election is held. In 2017, the state Legislature enacted Act 59, a biennial budget bill that limits a school board from approving no more than two resolutions in one year authorizing school funding increases. But it has not slowed the number of school districts that have chosen to go to referendum in 2018.
