Menomonie Dog Park partially closed Sept. 5-8

Menomonie Dog Park will be partially closed from Tuesday September 5 to Friday September 8.  The Large Dog Area will be closed.  The Small Dog Area will remain open.  The reason for the closure is that Xcel Energy will be installing a new maintenance gate in the northeast corner of the Large Dog Area.

Seven faculty, instructional staff receive 2022-23 teaching honors at UW-Stout ?JERRY POLING | AUGUST 28, 2023

Seven members of UW-Stout’s faculty and instructional staff have been honored for their outstanding work and efforts during the 2022-23 academic year.

Six employees received the Outstanding Teacher award and one received the Outstanding Graduate Faculty award Aug. 28 at a university event that kicked off the 2023-24 academic year.

“The start of the academic year provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our faculty and instructional academic staff as they prepare for their dynamic work with students,” said Glendalí Rodríguez, provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs.

The Outstanding Teacher award recognizes a commitment to excellence and the university community. Recipients and their departments are:

League of Women Voters celebrates women's right to vote

On August 26 the League of Women Voters of the Greater Chippewa Valley held a celebration of the passage of the 19th amendment, giving many women in the US the right to vote. There were informational tables, games, music, and several speakers. The speakers were Connie Russell, Eau Claire County Board Member; Rachel Henderson, President of the Board, Menomonie Area Schools; Andrea Nodolf, Dunn County District Attorney; Kathleen Macferran, Certified Trainer for the Center for Nonviolent Communication. The speakers are presented in the video.

Rules and regulations often get a bad rap. They can be onerous, outdated, or both. But at their best, regulations are put into place to ensure the safety of our communities, often in response to new technologies or evolving economies.

 

Occasionally regulations are implemented with foresight, but it’s not easy to predict how our society will change in advance. Regulations are oftentimes put in place because accidents occurred, or unscrupulous people cheated others.

 

I have the honor of serving on the Senate Committee on Universities and Revenue. At a public hearing last week, my colleagues and I heard from the public on two bills which propose changes to the way our state regulates alcoholic beverages and related industries.

Menomonie Wakanda Water Park closed for rest of season

MENOMONIE, WI (August 18, 2023)–Wakanda Water Park closed on Wednesday, August 16th and will not
On the afternoon of Wednesday, August 16th, a fecal incident occurred in the pool. In accordance with United
States Department of Health and Human Services guidelines, the pool was immediately cleared and closed for
the remainder of the day. City staff subsequently obtained and  distributed concentrated chlorine powder to
raise the free chlorine concentration in the pool and attempted to hold it at the required concentration long
enough to inactivate or kill cryptosporidium and other harmful parasites that exist within fecal matter.

DNR Seeking Public Comment On Proposed Wolf Management Rule

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking public comment on proposed permanent wolf rules relating to gray wolf harvest regulations (WM-03-21). The public comment period is open through Sept. 15, 2023.

Voter Registration Training with the League of Women Voters

MENOMONIE, WI -- A free voter registration training will be offered August 29, 2023, from 6:30-8 pm on Zoom by the League of Women Voters-Greater Chippewa Valley (LWV-GCV).

The information is geared for people who want to learn about voting in Wisconsin, so they may help guide others through the voter registration process. The session will also provide a good refresher training to people who are returning to voter registration volunteering after a few years away.

The goal of the training is for participants to feel comfortably knowledgeable in helping others register to vote and to know how to access expert resources.

Menomonie Market Food Co-op has announced a tentative opening date of Oct. 11 for their new store in Eau Claire. 

The opening date is exactly one year from the groundbreaking ceremony for the store.

Dustin Binder, county highway commissioner, said 3.3 miles of Highway B from Packer Drive to Highway BB will be repaved with new asphalt tentatively starting on Monday, Aug. 14.
Last Music Over Menomin of the Season

Thursday night the Menomonie Public Library held its last Music over Menomonin concert of the season. This is one of the sure signs that summer is ending. It was, as usual, a great concert with local band Balterdash, headed up by the ever-present Sue Orfield. 

Street Oiling in Menomonie week of August 14

During the Week of August 14, the City of Menomonie will be performing street maintenance on the streets and parking lots shown on the .  

City crews will place "No Parking This Block" signs on the next street segments to be done.  Cars left on the streets will be towed.  The work involves spraying a hot oil emulsion onto the existing street surface and immediately covering it with a layer of small rock particles.  

Regular Street street traffic and parking can resume as soon as the rock is applied.  Please keep children and pets away from the work until the following morning.  Excess rock will be swept up after approximately two weeks.
