Jeff Smith - Update Regarding the Vos-tage Situation

The most common question I get as a state legislator is “Can’t you all just work together?” In this terribly divided country we’re living in, that’s a big ask. But it’s abundantly clear that people want their elected officials to work things out together.

Help Slow The Spread Of CWD This Season: Avoid Baiting And Feeding Deer

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reminds hunters and the public to help prevent the spread of chronic wasting disease (CWD) by following all baiting and feeding bans and refraining from baiting and feeding in areas where no bans are in effect.

CWD is an always-fatal disease that affects the nervous system of deer, elk, moose and caribou caused by a misshapen prion protein. The disease can spread through contact with an infected animal's saliva, urine or feces. It can also spread indirectly through exposure to a contaminated environment. CWD prions are extremely resilient, and they can stay in the soil for a long time, making containment of an affected area a challenge.

Jeff Smith - Weaponizing Impeachment

Impeachment proceedings have become commonplace in our country's political landscape nowadays. I think we all can assume the founders of our country knew human nature – they know people and politicians can be flawed and impeachment was the check they needed to prevent individuals from abusing power. What our founders failed to imagine was the cheap and weaponized way that impeachment would be used to topple democracy and our institution of government.

Early Americans fought so hard to create our democratic republic and furnish it with the kind of protections they thought would best protect the liberty and the voice of the American public. It’s unlikely that they envisioned that impeachment could be used to undo the results of fair and free elections.

HSHS and Prevea system outages mostly resolved

According to a recent update from HSHS, they have restored connectivity to their EPIC software and are now fully functional and trying to finish bringing all of their remaining systems online. They are again accepting appointments and their patient portal is operating.

This evening the CEO and president of HSHS Damond Boatwright made a statement confirming that the outage was the result of a cyber-security incident and that third-party security experts and law enforcement are involved in the situation.

Jeff Smith - Generational Gaslighting

Ever hear the term gaslighting? It’s an odd term, but the practice has become too common in politics these days. It comes from a play written by Patrick Hamilton called “Gaslight.” In the play, a husband manipulates his wife into thinking she is having a mental breakdown by gradually changing the intensity of the gaslamps in their home.

A contemporary example is the rhetoric surrounding our college campuses. Republicans claim college students are being indoctrinated by liberal educators and institutions. It’s the latest futile effort to make our younger generations second-guess their educational experience.

Help Report And Manage Chronic Wasting Disease

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) invites the public to help report and manage Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) this fall.

CWD is a contagious, fatal neurological disease that affects the nervous system of deer, elk, moose and caribou. It belongs to the family of diseases known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) or prion diseases.

Prions are misshaped proteins that can spread the disease through direct animal-to-animal contact or in the environment through bodily fluids or carcass parts of an infected deer. Prions are extremely resilient and capable of remaining in the soil for years, potentially infecting several deer from a single source.

Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Rebecca Bradley criticized a colleague for not recusing from a case involving a donor. Six years ago, she helped kill a measure requiring those recusals.

Stokke Trail Temporary Closure Sept. 5 - October 13, 2023

Stokke Trail, which runs along the west side of the Red Cedar River between STH 29 and Meadow Hill Drive, will be closed from Tuesday, September 5 to Friday, October 13.  The reason for the closure is that drainage ditches are being improved and the trail is being resurfaced.  The trail will be reopened as soon as possible.
