Where Have We Been?

You may have noticed that posting here has been sparse lately. I've been on a vacation and have recently returned. You will see things picking back up again over the next few days. I'll have a little to write about from the vacation, notably about Amtrak and where they are going, along with a narrative of taking the Lake Shore Limited, and how that particular train is going.

So That Happened 4/14/2019

I'll be poking myself in here from time to time with rambling discussions of what is happening at Wis.Community, observations, and things you may or may not find interesting. This may at some point become a podcast. Or not. Bear with me. Call it a blog. Call it the musings of a quickly-aging guy. It's an experiment.

Winter Was Hard

Winter Was Hard

Winter continues to unleash upon us. More stories are coming on about barn collapses, accidents, and more caused by the incredible weather we have been experiencing. Today almost all of the area schools are closed due to water covering the roads, making them impassable. I am at the moment sitting out at the farm and wondering if I will be able to get into town tomorrow for the Red Cedar Watershed Conference.

Erin Link - Finding the Right Fit

Hey! It's the first week of February, and we just got done with the polar vortex of DOOM! Seeing negative forty on my thermometer is a bit frightening. Thankfully these cold temps didn't last for long, and all the farm critters were tucked away and did just fine. The geese even opted to sleep outside on hay piles during this cold snap. They are such hardy little critters!I am currently sitting at a motel in the Dells for the Grassworks Conference.

Keeping On - Help!

The Beatles - Help!

As you have probably noticed, life on this web site has slowed somewhat the last few months. Those of you who know me personally are probably aware that we're dealing with serious family health issues at Cruiskeen Lawn, and that has made it difficult to get a lot of work done, much less make long-range plans.

Final Voyage Of The Christmas Tree Ship

Decorating Christmas trees often evokes sentimental memories of years gone by. The business behind this holiday custom has deep roots in Wisconsin’s history. One story that stands out is an early 20th Century shipwreck that serves as a reminder of the often-dangerous conditions faced by those who have plied the Great Lakes' waters.

Changes in the Eau Claire restaurant scene

A few big changes in some highly-valued restaurants in Eau Claire:

The popular coffee shop Racy D'Lene's and the associated breakfast spot The Nucleus are changing hands. They have been purchased by Pablo Properties, currently involved in The Oxbow Hotel and The Lismore in Eau Claire. Pablo Properties has promised to not make big changes in either of the very popular spots, but the new owners do intend to attempt to source more local ingredients.

New Web Security Feature - update

LION logo

Wis.Community is a member of LION publishers. We receive multiple benefits from this, one of which is receiving full coverage with Cloudflare for our site. This protects the site from DDOS attacks and hackers, and improves the site performance. This should work out great, but we are currently tuning some of the parameters for the web firewall.

WISCONSIN 2018 MIDTERM ELECTION CANDIDATE QUESTIONNAIRE

Wisconsin Backcountry Hunters & Anglers has created an on-line vote guide for people concerned about conservation and hunting. The organization sent a voter questionnaire to most of the up-ballot candidates for office. This guide concerns policy that will be pursued by the candidates in regard to hunting, fishing, the DNR, and other conservation issues.

You may have noted that postings have been slow recently. I am off in Chicago at the LION Publisher Summit at Columbia College. This is always a great experience for learning the latest in technology, strategy, and everything else about publishing local independent news.
