Wisconsin detects new fast-spreading COVID-19 variant January 13, 2021 - 12:08pm

On January 12 the Wisconsin Department of Health Services discovered the presence of a new strain of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, in Wisconsin.

The particular variant, referred to as B.1.1.7, was first discovered circulating widely in England during November and December of 2020. Based on epidemiologic and modeling studies, researchers believe that this new strain spreads more rapidly and easily than the original strain of SARS-CoV-2. However, there is no evidence that the new strain causes more severe illness or increased risk of death.

Wisconsin Senate modifies Assembly COVID-19 bill - Governor urges passage January 12, 2021 - 3:57pm

In today's Senate session more changes were made to the Assembly's proposed COVID-19 billl, removing many of the items that Democrats and some Republicans in the legislature objected to. The modified bill is now going back to the state Assembly.

Gone are the bans on mandatory vaccines for employment, supermajority votes of school boards and other issues that would cripple local health authorities, and prohibitions of the closing of churches. 

Live Justice Department and FBI Press call on Washington Riot Status, Eau Claire man charged January 12, 2021 - 3:24pm

The FBI has opened over 160 case files on the activities in Washington on Jan 6. They have received over 100,000 pieces of digital media and the FBI is asking for more. Over 70 cases have been charged and the FBI expects that to grow into the 100's. 

The charges are very wide-ranging from simple charges of trespassing up to planting pipe bombs, assault and battery on police officers, and different theft charges.

Some of the rioters specifically attacked media members and assaulted them, and a separate team is working on those charges. 

Gov. Evers to deliver State of the State speech tonight January 12, 2021 - 2:31pm

At 7 PM tonight Wiscnsin Governor Tony Evers will deliver his State of the State speech for 2021. The speech will be carried on Facebook Live and YouTube, and will be shown on this page as well. The speech will also be shown on PBS Wisconsin's Wisconsin Channel, with a response from Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu, R-Oostburg to be carried on the Here and Now program on Friday night.

A day of virtual programming to commemorate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be livestreamed beginning at noon through Pablo Center and Facebook Live on the King Remembrance Program Facebook page. Community members can register on the Pablo Center site. Parts of the day’s events will be broadcast live on Converge Radio, 101.9 FM.

Jeff Smith - New Session, Same Story January 12, 2021 - 11:32am

Last Monday, on January 4th, the Wisconsin State Legislature began the 2021-22 legislative session. New members were sworn in and all elected officials looked ahead to the new session.

 

Inauguration Day is an important reminder that the Legislature includes elected representatives from many walks of life. Our job is to listen to professionals and ensure they have what they need to do their jobs the best they can.

 

Menomonie School Board Meeting for Jan 11, 2021 January 11, 2021 - 7:26pm

The Menomonie School Board will meet at 5:30 PM on Jan 11, 2021. 

The meeting was preceeded by the mid-year budget hearing. The budget document is attached.

In order to provide sufficient physical distancing, in-person attendance for the public Board meeting will be limited to 25 people. It is anticipated that there will be 14 spaces available for members of the public.

Gov. Evers and Department of Health Services Call on Federal Government to Distribute More COVID-19 Vaccine January 11, 2021 - 1:31pm Gov. Tony Evers and the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) are today calling on the federal government to increase the amount of COVID-19 vaccine doses in the state’s weekly allocations. In just nearly three weeks of vaccine allocation and distribution, Wisconsin built up 1,098 vaccine provider locations that stand ready to give vaccinations throughout the state in order to finish Phase 1A and begin vaccinating more Wisconsinites.
