Where's the Local News?

As our readers know, WisCommunity has for some time been concerned about the state of news coverage in Dunn County, particularly the declining coverage of civic events and government. This is primarily a one-man operation and it has been difficult to plug the quickly leaking hole in the news coverage dike.

I have for several months been involved in a news discussion group consisting of members who are former journalists in the county, the , and other concerned citizens. We are working on developing new ideas and methods for improving news coverage in the county in a sustainable way.

We are holding a to learn more about what the needs of the community are and how we can work together to develop more sustainable and powerful news coverage. If this is a topic that interests you, we would like to invite you to join us in a session to be held at the Menomonie Library on February 9, 2022 at 1:30 PM. This will be an in-person meeting, but you may also attend and provide comments in an on-line option that will be hosted by WisCommunity.

Those interested in attending in person on Feb 9 are asked to register at

Thinking about a "legal structure" for Community News.  I like the "co-operative model".  This gives an ongoing and sustainable legal entitiy with a board of directors.  This means that one person can be hired as and "overseer" or "manager" or "editor"  It also means that others can be involved at employees or volunteers or members can write editorials.  All members have a voice (vote) and there are by-laws (guidelines) and mission statement. There is a membership fee...that can be one time or it can be an annual subscription...or both.  It might be a $100 lifetime with an annual fee of $10.  Advertising could be limited to local businesses.
