Gerrymandering/Redistricting meeting - Chippewa Valley League of Women Voters

This is the first forum sponsored by the recently-rebooted Chippewa Valley League of Women Voters chapter. This session is a presenation by Andrea Kaminski, Executive Director of the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin, and Jay Heck, Executive Director of Common Cause. The session was followed by a lively Q&A session. There were over 75 in attendance at the meeting, which is a great start for the local chapter.

The Menomonie School District held a forum on the proper place of teching religion in the public school system. The school board recently adopted an action plan for the teaching of religious subjects in the school district, and a clearer policy on the ability of parents to opt out of particular classes for their children.

What if you woke up one morning turned on the faucet to wash your face and saw brown water coming out of your tap?
 
Stacy Sylla of rural Lincoln Township in Trempealeau County texted me just such a photo of water the color of sludge. She has gone through three washing machines, dug fistfuls of sand out of the tank of her toilet, and bought an expensive water-filtering device. Her horse, Apples, died of exposure to toxins and pollutants found in her water.
 
The likely cause of the well problems? A new sand mine just over a half a mile away from Stacy and Mike Sylla’s farm.
