Astronomy Day
Planetarium shows, activities, and displays about astronomy for all ages. See a working radio telescope, meteorites, and telescopes. Learn about constellations, radioactivity, and infrared radiation. Participants can examine the sun using a solar-filtered telescope (weather permitting). This is a FREE event. Sponsored by the UWEC Department of Physics and Astronomy and the Chippewa Valley Astronomical Society. In the evening, Hobbs Observatory at Beaver Creek Reserve will host public observing of the night sky from dark to 11 p.m., weather permitting. Hobbs Observatory is located across the road from the Wise Nature Center, four miles east of Fall Creek. Volunteers from the Chippewa Valley Astronomical Society open the telescopes to the public most clear Saturday nights from May through October (cvastro.org for calendar) Schedule: - 10:00 AM – 3:30 PM: Exhibits in Phillips Hall lobby and breezeway - 10:30 AM – 11:00 AM: Liquid Nitrogen Demos - 11:00 AM – 11:30 AM: Planetarium Show - 12:00 PM – 12:30 PM: Planetarium Show - 12:30 PM – 1:00 PM: Liquid Nitrogen Demos - 1:00 PM – 1:30 PM: Planetarium Show - 2:00 PM – 2:30 PM: Planetarium Show - Dark – 11:00 PM: public observing at Hobbs Observatory (see above for directions; weather permitting)
