The storied and historic Guthrie Theater was invented and founded by the Anglo-Irish director, Sir Tyrone Guthrie (1900-1971) on Vineland Place in 1963 and then moved across the city and reinvented in a beautiful symmetry by another Irishman: the Dublin director, Joe Dowling in 2006. The extraordinary Guthrie Theater – one of the most significant regional theaters in America - has been profoundly and indelibly shaped by its Irish roots. Understand the biographies and creative dynamics of these two Irish directors who fulfilled lifelong ambitions for how theatre should be presented and constructed in their sojourns in Minnesota and, in turn, profoundly deepened the cultural riches of our North Star state.
