I first met Brett Hulsey in 1999 when I was Gore's press secretary for the Iowa Caucuses. Brett was very helpful to me and the rest of the Gore campaign in helping re-introduce Gore to envionmentalists that had grown disillusioned with the Clinton administration. This was the same Brett that was a member of Clinton's vaunted "War Room" in 1992 and was a pretty well-respected strategist in political circles.
Unfortunately, the Brett that I knew 15 years ago is long gone. The Brett today is someone that is suffering from a serious mental illness.
I hope the Brett I knew will one day return, but until then, the media and everyone else needs to do whatever they can to help him and stop being part of the problem. That means, stop playing the role of the mean school yard jerk, getting the special ed kid to do silly things so that you can make fun of him.
