Update -

There have been 665 submissions to the Knight News Challenge - a remarkable number of those came in during the last few hours before the deadline. So - the competition is fierce.  I'd really love some feedback and ideas, since the challenge is now in the feedback stage, where both the Knight Foundation and the public are providing feedback on the ideas.  There's an amazing array of ideas in the challenge this year. Stop over and take a look.

I've just put up a grant proposal to this year's Knight News Challenge.  It's called  I have been working on this as a project with a few others for a while now, and have built a few simple prototypes.  Basically the idea here is to build on-line communities that can incorporate concepts of news and conversation in one place -- I'd like to move the conversation beyond the typical quick-shot comment and into something more meaningful and long-term. The idea is to make it as easy as possible for people to pariticipate, so the platform would support email, text messaging, mobile apps, and normal just-plain-going-to-the-web-page.

Please bop on over to the and see what the proposals are so far.  Also please feel free to comment on my proposal and any others while you're over there. Also, let me know if you have any interest in participating in the project (assuming of course that we dredge up some funding somewhere for it).
