"The inhumane conditions of Bradley Manning's detention"

The Salon article at http://www.salon.com/news/opinion/glenn_greenwald/2010/12/14/manning alleges (and it seems true to me) that Manning has been held in psychologically crippling solitary confinement and is denied even a sheet and pillow for his bed.

No civilized nation should treat its prisoners this way - whether proven guilty or not. Do our government officials not know that God is watching them and will hold them accountable to Him? How is it that our government turned into this kind of entity, and when did it happen?

What - if anything- can everyday ordinary Americans do about this?
