With GOP's pro-mining bill, it's all about following the money and following the leader

From the last paragraph of a news story at The Capital Times online news site, all ye need know about the rationale behind the Republican fly-by-night push to all but deregulate mining in the state, at the risk of serious environmental damage and a badly scarred natural landscape:

"This bill is about creating jobs for my district," Sen. Pam Galloway, R-Wausau, told the committee Friday, echoing the Republican theme. Galloway is facing a recall. "The positive impacts of this mine being built will be felt not only in northern Wisconsin, but across the state."

It'll be felt, all right, but not in the positive way Galloway argues. This is, rather, about the promise of a relatively few jobs. It's about massive and irreplaceable resource extraction from this state at bargain prices. It's about the GOP paying back business interests,  including the Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce lobbying group, for big campaign donations. It's about GOP politicians like Galloway trying to find a way to avoid recall.

And, it's about time we lose this kind of politics in Wisconsin.
