While Gov. Scott Walker continues to press Wisconsin's 14 Democratic state senators to come back from exile in Illinois and "do their jobs," his Republican storm troopers in the state legislature have given the Dems two good reasons to stay away.

First, the state Assembly, in the middle of the night, abruptly cut off debate and hurriedly voted to pass Walker's union busting bill, without even giving most of the Democrats a chance to cast their votes.

Second, Republicans in the State Senate, with the Dems all absent,  gave preliminary approval to the Assembly-passed Walker bill.

That means they have advanced it to the stage where it can no longer be amended.

Why on earth would the Senate Democrats want to return?
