"Homo Sapiens: Hitchhiking Toward Sapience"Jane R. Shoup, professor emerita from Purdue University NorthwestHomo sapiens - (very clever, but seldom wise) has evolved with a Stone Age brain inherited from our ancestors on the African savannah. In the last 200 years, we have discovered and exploited, in our cleverness, a one-time bonanza of cheap, stored fossil energy upon which we have become almost totally dependent. We have succumbed to expectations of inevitable, never-ending progress. But it is a tragic delusion to assume that growth – on a finite planet – can continue inevitably. The preceding is a summary of “Homo sapiens: Hitchhiking Toward Sapience,” the April 18 session of the Thursdays at the U Lecture and Performance series, to be held in the Blue Hills Lecture Hall (Ritzinger 234) at the UWEC Barron County campus. The presenter, Jane R. Shoup, is Professor Emerita of Biological Sciences at Purdue University Calumet, Hammond, IN, where she taught for 33 years. She holds the BA in Biology from the University of Rochester and a PhD in Zoology from the University of Chicago. In retirement, she and her husband Stefan live in a solar house in NE Wisconsin. Jane has recently presented a number of classes for the LIFE (Learning Is ForEver) program at UW Stevens Point, including “Darwin and His ‘Dangerous’ Idea”; “An Ecolate View of the Human Predicament”; “Learning to Live within Limits”; “The Sixth Mass (Anthropocene) Extinction”; and “A Journey through Time: Running the Colorado River in Grand Canyon.”Lecture attendees are welcome to bring their lunch to the presentation.______________________________________________ Thursdays @ the U lecture series will run throughout the spring semester. The series, partly funded by the UW-Barron County Foundation, will explore topics in the arts, sciences, public affairs, literary fields and cultural areas. While hosting a variety of speakers, the university does not seek to endorse or promote a particular idea, opinion, topic or product over others. These lectures are free and open to the public.
