Thursdays at the U Lecture and Performance Series "Talkin' Trash" is the topic of the November 7th session of the Thursdays at the U Lecture and Performance Series. It will highlight current practices in municipal solid waste management, with a special emphasis on local waste management practices.202f Do you know where your trash goes when it's picked up curbside? Are all of your recyclables eventually recycled? Are there ways to reduce your personal contribution to our region's solid waste stream?202f202fYou'll travel202ffrom curb to incinerator to landfill, and202flearn sustainable practices that anyone can employ to minimize the environmental impacts of living in202four so-called202f"throwaway society." If you live in Barron County or adjacent regions, you'll want to attend this talk before your next scheduled trash pick-up day! The day’s presenter will be Dr. Lauren Wentz, an Associate Professor of Biology at UW-Eau Claire--Barron County. She teaches a variety of courses, including anatomy, plant biology, and environmental science.202f202fWhile Dr. Wentz's202fresearch interests focus on acoustic communication in birds, her interests in the natural world run the gamut from bird behavior to spider diversity to understanding human fascination with objects and material goods.202f Recently, Dr. Wentz developed a state-mandated training course for Wisconsin incinerator operators, a project that ignited her interest in what we throw away and what happens to the202fthings we use once we're finished with them. The talk will be in the Blue Hills Lecture Hall (Ritzinger 234) on the UW Eau Claire – Barron County campus, located at 1800 College Drive in Rice Lake. Thanks to financial support from the campus foundation, each presentation in this series is free and open to the public.
