"The Constitution and a Cross: Debating the First
Amendment Case of American Legion v. American Humanist Association"A panel of experts will discuss a Supreme Court
case (American Legion v. American Humanist Association) on the
constitutionality of a cross-shaped war memorial on public land. The panel will
take place on the same day that the case will be argued in front of the Supreme
Court. The panelists will debate whether or not the monument in question violates
the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.Panelists will include Rick Esenberg (President
of Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty), James Szymalak (Assistant
Professor of Public Administration at UW-La Crosse), and Jerry Thomas
(Associate Professor of Political Science at UW-Oshkosh). The event will be
moderated by Eric T. Kasper, Associate Professor of Political Science and
Director of the Center for Constitutional Studies at UW-Eau Claire. This event is sponsored by the UWEC Center for
Constitutional Studies and the UWEC Pre-Law Club. Funding for this event was
provided by the UW-Stout Center for the Study of Institutions and Innovation.Free copies of the Constitution will be
available for those in attendance. This event is free and open to the public.
