The Joel Hayden Salter Art Gallery was dedicated to the memory of UW-Barron County Professor, Joel Hayden Salter, on May 1st, 1977. Mr. Salter taught from the time of the campus opened in 1967 until his death at the age of 48. He was known for his Ash Can School style of painting, though he was also known locally for his still-life and nature paintings. Before joining UW-Barron County, Salter was a curator for the Wisconsin State Historical Society in Madison. Salter was a music enthusiast and accomplished musician who played piano, banjo and other stringed instruments. While in Rice Lake Salter played with The Hall Brothers New Orleans Jazz Band, The Deans List and a number of other local groups. The Joel Hayden Salter Gallery is located in the Fine Arts Building and features exhibitions by professional artists and students throughout the year. Gallery hours are listed below. All gallery events are free and open to the public. The Gallery typically features six exhibitions per year, showcasing the work of regionally and nationally-renowned artists, as well as local artists and youth groups.
